I am not really the person who is involved in many things at school. I am shy person, so I never really joined clubs or did many activities. The readings assigned on Monday discussed how college students can fit in during their freshman year because it can be hard for some people to fit in. The second reading for Monday discussed three categories of loneliness college students face. The first weeks of college was kinda hard for me to fit in because there were so many more people on campus unlike summer bridge. It was hard for me to fit in because my classes were much larger and there were many more students I don’t know. A factor why it is so hard for my to fit in was that I am shy, so I would be shy to talk to people I don’t know. I also faced loneliness during my first months in college because I would just be alone most of the time and had no friends to hang out with or talk to in most of my classes. I also felt lonely because it was the first time in many years that I was far from my family who I see everyday. Though I am an independent person, a huge part of me felt very lonely. Being able to be apart of summer bridge has helped me because I was able to become friends with people and and become familiar with some of my peers that I can talk to in some of my classes. This helped me build connections with some people who I call friends now. The other two reading on Wednesday discussed the appropriate ways to stand up for yourself and communicate effectively without stepping on others and the other reading shared tip on becoming personally effective and successful by having a plan and knowing what you want. These reading have taught me ways to communicate correctly because sometimes I am really bad at communicating with people so when I communicate with other people I feel that I come off as rude, which is something I really am not. The tips on becoming effective have made me look back and think about my goals as well as the plan steps I am going to take to accomplish my goals.

A person's skills is what makes them different. There are things we can't do that other people can, but this does not show that they are better. It just shows that we can learn from other people and grow as we cannot be good at everything. In the article, Sears talks about being personally effective. She mentions that those who know what they want in life and have a sense of direction, they are the ones who are more successful than those who don't. I agree with this statement because if you know what you want and have a plan then it is easier to achieve it than not having a plan so it takes longer to realize and achieve what they want to do/be. The tips that Sears mentions in the article to become personally effective are replacing distractions with energy boosters, simplifying your life, managing time effectively, learning to say no, managing money well, build a strong network of friends, make time for yourself, identify and manage stress, and accepting and adapting to change. In my opinion these tips are very helpful to becoming personally effective as they help bring out positivity. "Standing Up for Yourself-- Without Stepping on Others" -Ruthann Fox-HinesCommunication is one of the important things we need in order to do many things. There are many forms of comminication that can be used to communicate with everyone. In the article, Hines mentions that there are different varieties of communication These varieties are are passive, agressive, and passive-agressive. He states that these variations of communication are not well revieved by people. As stated in the article having an assertive behavior is the most effective and postive ways to stand up for yourself and being able to communicate your feelings and needs. Assertiveness is defined as clear, direct, respectful, responsible communication whether it be verbal or nonverbal. The ways to stand up for yourself is to have mutual respect and personal responsibility, have an assertive approach, have respect for the other person as well as respect for yourself, and most importantly be specific on what you want or trying to tell the other person so there will be no confusion or miscommunication.
In the article, the authors focus mainly on loneliness especially for college students. In the beginning of the article the authors mention that the early months of college are where there is a deep feeling of loneliness. "Loneliness is a common experience of college life." I agree with this statement because I have experienced this during the first months of college. I was still getting used to the campus as well as everyone else around me. I had to make new friends and meet new people. Barbara and Philip Newman states that loneliness can be classified into three categories. These categories are transient, situational, and chronic. They describe transient loneliness to last a short time and passes. Situational loneliness accompanies a sudden loss or move to a new city. Chronic loneliness lasts a long time and cannot be linked to a specific event or situation. "Fitting In" -Betty LaSere Erickson & Diane Weltner StrommerIn the article, Erickson and Strommer discusses how well college students fit in, especially freshman students. They state that since colleges have grown and become more complex and bureaucratic, freshmans who are used to smaller groups are finding a hard time fitting in college. They also state that though there are support programs for freshmen's in college they are still expected to adapt quickly. "Finding a niche academically, fitting into and succeeding in classes, may have more influence on personal growth, this study suggests, than does fitting in socially." In my opinion, I think a balance of the two would be the best influence on personal growth because to be able to find more about ourselves we have to find it in our academics as well as our social lives. A balance of the two is important because we students are not going to be in school the rest of our lives. In my opinion being able to fit in socially is important as we come across many different people everyday throughout our lives.
In the article, Morrill states that the American society shows a concern for values. He also states that everyone has a different meaning for values. Many people also value different things. In the article, the author mentions that some people value things that are most important to them, while other value ideals or goals. To discover our values, an exercise has been developed by Milton Rokeach. This exercise allows us to rank our intrinsic and instrumental values. Morill also states that "true values must be freely chosen by the person and cannot be accepted simply on the authority of another person." I agree with this statement because a persons values should come from their own and not from other people because then it wouldn't be that persons values its the other people's, This article is really helpful in helping people discover their values and also learn about what true values are really are. "What Students Must Know to Succeed in the 21st Century" -Donna UchidaIn the article, Uchida discuss the essential elements that are necessary to education. The first element is the use of math, logic, and reasoning skills; functional and operational literacy; and an understanding of statistics. The second element is critical interpersonal skills, including speaking, listening, and the ability to be part of a team. The third element is effective information accessing and processing skills using technology. The fourth element is writing skills to enable students to communicate effectively. The fifth element is having knowledge of American history and government to function in democratic society and an understanding of issues surrounding patriotism. The sixth element is having scientific knowledge base, including applied science. The seventh element is having an understanding of history of the world and world affairs. The eighth element is having multicultural understanding, including insights into diversity and the need for an international perspective. The ninth element is having knowledge of foreign languages. The last element is having knowledge of world geography. All these elements remind me of the GE requirements in college because of all the classes we are required to take in college, even though some classes are not required for our majors.
"Strengthening Your Personal Development through Community Engagement" -Vanessa Arnaud, Ph.D.11/10/2017 In the article, Arnaud talks about exploring and going beyond what you are used to. Arnaud emphasizes that community engagement is one of the most effective ways of exploring your life's priorities and values. The author also states that there are many different things we should learn about and explore to gain more knowledge, The author also advises that learning about social issues that exist throughout the world today is important and can be a big help in the performance of students. By knowing these important issues, it pushes students to learn more of a larger audience as Arnaud states in the article. "Involvement and commitment to your community will enhance your understanding of your own personal strengths and weaknesses." I agree with this part of the article because by being involved in many different things and also being able to experience different things will allow you to learn more about yourself and also figure out what you can and can't do, as well as learning what you want to do in life. I think that being openminded and out in the community allows people self-exploration to find themselves. "The Developing College Student" -Virginia N. GordonIn the article, Gordon states that from research they have found that many college students develop and change throughout their college experience. I believe that this is true because in my opinion college is a place where people learn and grow as well as a place for self-exploration. Gordon also states that they have found phases that links the students view of whats around them. These phases are dualistic, multiplistic, and relativism. Another theorist also discovers seven developmental tasks that students move during college. These seven tasks are achieving competence, managing emotions, moving through autonomy toward interdependence, developing mature interpersonal relationships, developing purpose, and developing integrity. I really enjoyed this article. I learned many tasks and phases college students go through during their time in college as we learn and grow.
In the article, Lacy and Crosby discusses the benefits of being a college graduate and having a degree. With a college degree, it leads to more bigger and better opportunities as well as higher earnings. In the article they state that though going to college can be expensive in both time and money, in the end the rewards are bigger and better. With more people going to college, people are getting higher pay and unemployment lessens, which in my opinion is better for the economy. Many statistics and charts are also imbedded in the article to show that there are many job openings in the future. In my opinion, I think this article is helpful in showing the job outlooks for the future for future college graduates. "Outlooks and Insights: Succeeding on the Job and in Life" -Carol CarterIn the article, Carter explains that a persons' first job is a way to start go get where they want to be. Carter also states that people measure themselves and think it is a competition with all the materialistic things they have. In the article Carter reminds us to be true to yourself and your values, as it is really what is important. I agree with Carter, because at the end of the day, even though you have everything in the world and you still aren't happy, it is not as important as you think it is. "In college and in life, it's important to do what you believe an what you feel is right." You can't please everyone, it is important to put yourself first and do what you want, at the end of the day it is yourself and your own life.
In the article, Seligman discusses the topic of money and happiness. Seligman discusses that the economy is changing from money economy to satisfactory economy. Seligman also discusses the topic of work and maximizing work satisfaction. He talks about learning to enjoy your work if you don't enjoy it already and how you can be satisfied or learn to be satisfied with your work. In the article, there is also a work-life survey and lists of different occupations. Seligman also states at the end of the article that American have more flow at work that in leisure. In my opinion, I was surprised with this statement because with almost everyone working all the time, I would think that they would enjoy their leisure time more. "Using the Decision-Making Process To Choose a College Major & Career Path" -Debra Marcus & David McVeyIn the article, it is stated that choosing a major/career field involves the decision-making process and it can be hard without the proper information. They also suggest that trying out different majors before really setting in stone a major can help in determining what undergraduates really want and want to do. In the article they provide a six-step decision-making model that can help people in making important decisions in life. The first step is identify the decisions to be made, second is get to know yourself, third is begin to identify options, fourth is factors influencing decisions, fifth is identify your options, and the sixth one is design a course of action to implement with the decisions. In my opinion, I think there six steps would be a big help in helping a person with their decisions. "Postgraduate Paralysis" -Mary SherryIn the article, Sherry talks about college graduates not happy with their accomplishments as it is not the jobs they expected, such as having a high salary or getting good benefits though they took the right classes in college and have gotten good grades. Sherry also mentions that most new graduate aren't happy with anything less than high-level, which makes them expect to be given high-end paying jobs. In my opinion, I think that we can't expect to be given high-level right away. I believe that there are steps to earn that high-level and it includes working hard to earn it. Online Session Week 10One of the passages that stood out to me is “Do what you love, and don’t stop until you get what you love.” This stood out to me because this encourages people including me that no matter what people tell you to do, in the end listen to yourself and do what you want. There are also setbacks along the way that can stop you, just don’t give up because in the end you can achieve anything you put your heart and mind into. Another passage that stood out to me is “everyone can change and grow through application and experience.” This stood out to me because I believe that the only way to change and grow is when you try new things, weather you fail or succeed, doing this will help you experience and see your abilities such as strengths and weaknesses. This will help you as a person know more about yourself and get you closer to discovering what/who you really are. “I think intelligence is something you have to work for… it isn’t just given to you…” This stood out to me because I agree with this statement. There is no way that intelligence can be given to a person, you have to earn it by learning and experiencing new things. The last passage that really stood out to me is “Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better? Why hide deficiencies instead of overcoming them? Why look for friends or partners who will just shore up your self-esteem instead of ones who will also challenge you to grow? And why seek out the tried and true, instead of experiences that will stretch you?” This passage really stood out to me because it asks questions that makes you think and really ask yourself. These questions are very realistic and shows people reality. These questions not only makes people realize but it is also a way to help them improve and become better as a person. From what I read, I believe I can adopt more with growth mindset because even though I feel bad when I get bad critiques, at the end of the day I think of ways to improve and try my best to overcome challenges that cross my path. I also tend to give up after many tries, but I always get back up and keep trying again as I have learned to lengthen my patience more. My understanding of the fixed versus growth mindset better inform my understanding of passive versus active learning and intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation by know their differences and similarities in their meaning and also helps me identify what I am. In my opinion I think a growth mindset is necessary to formulate and advance my own agenda for my education and achieve happiness for myself because I believe that having a growth mindset gives better opportunities and better a person as a whole. Having a growth mindset will teach you not give up easily and seek your highest potential in life. A growth mindset can also help me learn more and also expand on my understanding and learnings as well as improve myself to become better and better. There is always room to improve and work on yourself.
In the article, Bowen states that the baccalaureate degree signifies many things. Everyone has a different definition of a baccalaureate degree. Bowen also states that there is a modal concept of the degree even though there are many requirements and conditions that has to be achieved before it is earned. The baccalaureate degree includes a variety of things such as learning certain subjects, board emotional and moral development, and their practical competence. The modal concept as stated in the article is defined in terms of characteristics imparted to students. In the article Bowen also gives more information about personal education and practical education. Bowen describes personal education as it is primarily designed to enhance each individual as a person. He also describes practical education as it is designed to enhance specific skills of use in work and other practical affairs. "It's Okay to be Undeclared" -Julie Collier, M.S. and Al Levin, Ed.D.In the article, Collins states that students have more occupational options than in the past. Collins also states that being undeclared for the first two years has advantages. In my opinion I don't think that it has an advantage, but it is also to make sure students don't waste their time in a major they aren't sure about. Collins advises to consider several careers as things can change, especially with everything happening all over the world today. Everything is fast pace. She also advises that being flexible in planning your career is a wise choice. She mentions that taking classes that interests you is a good idea for exploring majors. I agree with this statement because in order to find what you want, you have to explore other things. I also agree with Collin's statement about how its okay to be undeclared as long as you participate in activities such as taking different classes, volunteering, joining a student club, studying abroad, or obtaining a summer internship. I think these are all good ideas to consider when being undeclared and finding a potential major. "Major Decisions" -James Tunstead BurtchaellIn the article, Burtchaell states that deciding which major to pursue is tricky and difficult as there are so many options. Pressure is also one of the major difficulties in choosing a major as parents want to decide the major they want for their child without asking what really interests them. Most students only choose their majors to satisfy their parents' wants. Once they graduate they are not happy with their career, which ends in a miserable career path. Burtchaell mentions that "education prepares you to be someone more than to do something". "Education prepares you in advance to see beneath and beyond what is well known". I agree with these points in the article as they make strong points of what education is. I believe that education is one of the most important parts of one's life as almost everyone can get an education (if they want) now. College is about finding who you are and teaching skills you will use thought your life. It is also preparing you for your future and career, which is why deciding a major is very important and also a very hard decision.
In the article, Zernike emphasizes the importance of experience in college. Kate Zernike states that "it doesn't matter where you go to college, but what you make of the experience," I agree with this statement because at the end you are gonna remember all the experiences you had in college whether it be on campus or off campus. It is also mentioned in the article that researcher have done research with college students who attended Harvard. In the research they asked students' what make certain courses effective and had a correlation on the students' academic and personal choices and how they feel about them. In the article it is stated that to improve ones' college experience they should meet the faculty, take a mix of courses, study in groups, write a lot, speak another language, manage your time, and hold the drum. I agree with some of Zernike's points as I also think that a persons college experience is important because it will be some of the things to look back to in the future and also because college is a big part of ones' life as we meet many new people and also learn and experience new things. "A New Debate Is Joined Over an Old Question: Is College an Investment or an End in Itself?" -James CicarelliIn the article, Cicarelli discusses the objective of higher education and how to measure its impact on students. In the article it is mentioned that there is a debate on what college is and what students should obtain in college. One side of the debate states that college is where students go to add more information to their knowledge. It is also stated that knowledge can be measured by standardized tests which tests students before they enter the university, in the middle, and in the end of their college careers. The other side of the debate argues that college should be where students learn and appreciate their cultural heritage, learn more skills in critical thinking and communication, and to transform themselves from being self-centered individuals into decent and caring students. It is also argued in the article that colleges should focus more on development of moral principles than on the accumulation of knowledge. In my opinion I think there should be a balance of adding to ones' knowledge and also finding more about themselves. There should be a balance of both sides of the debate because in my opinion it is important to have knowledge as it is used in everyday life, but it is also important that students learn more about themselves, learn to communicate and have critical thinking skills as it is part of their everyday life to communicate with people and also to solve some problems that can come along the way unexpectedly. "Fourteen Ways of Looking at Electives" -Thomas L. MinnickIn the article, Minnick gives tips and options on how to use extra classes to your advantage. Electives can be used to explore possible majors as most students who enter college are undeclared, to serve as a cushion when a student wants to change their major without losing useful credits, to develop a focus or cluster outside your major, to explore career options, to enhance your marketability, to develop a neglected talent, to get or stay fit, to develop skills in leisure time activities, to learn to help others, to learn life skills that will be useful in the future, to understand and appreciate different cultures, to learn study and time management skills, to develop leadership skills, and lastly to take some courses for fun. In my opinion elective serve for many things in college as it can be a way to help students in their intended majors or just to have fun. I agree with Minnick's tips about electives because I believe all of the fourteen points he described in the article about electives are true.
In the article, Gardner discusses the real truth of college professors vs. high school teachers. Gardner mentions that students think their professors don't care or understand them, but in reality most of them do. John Gardner states the most professors in college are really interested in their students' well-being and hope they earn good grades in their class. Even though we see them as strict and careless about their students', they are just doing it to get the best out of their students'. Gardner also differentiates college professors to high school teachers by stating that college professors don't spend that much time teaching from textbooks but rather from their experiences while high school teachers check notebooks and teach information they have accumulated from others or from the textbook. I agree with Garners statements as high school is very much different from college. In college we are not treated as little kids where we are told everything, instead we are guided and it's up to us to get to our destination. "Freshmen Can Be Taught to Think Creatively, not Just Amass Information" -David C. Finster In the article, Finster states that to be an effective teacher, they must know something about learning. He also describes a good teacher as one who builds the students' knowledge of the content and also teach them to think critically as they learn. In the article, Finster mentions the way students' learn. He talks about Perry's theory of cognitive development and Perry's "'developmental scheme"'. The developmental scheme consists of progressive stages of development in young people of the ability to comprehend the difference between information and knowledge. In the article, Finster mentions that Perry notes a distinct developmental "positions" along the way to maturity in young students'.
In the article “Why I Don’t Let Students Cut My Classes,” Brown’s observation of his students is that many of them don’t attend class regularly. Brown mentions that many of his students cut class because of many reasons that students come up with. He mentions that students’ cut class because they are allowed to, and because the belief they should learn responsibility by being free. They have learned that undergraduates cut class because they have other important responsibilities to do and they also try to avoid the consequences if they attend. In my opinion I agree with Brown’s view if students’ not being able to cut class. I think that if students’ decide to cut a class repeatedly they should just drop the class, just like what Brown said in the article because they are just wasting the professors time and also taking someone’s else’s place who would be eager to attend the class. I do agree that students cut class for excuses such as completing homework from another class, doing something for their outside job, or attending social engagements. I believe that these are unacceptable reasons to cut class because it could be done on their free time. Why pay for college/ the class if your not going to attend. I do believe that professors want the best for their students’ and are doing their part to help them succeed, but it is up to the students’ to do their part and help themselves out if they want to succeed. At the end of the day, it is the life of the student that will be affected, as they can’t blame anybody for the actions they made. In the article “Student Expectations Seen as Causing Grade Disputes,” Roosevelt’s observation of his students is that just because they did their best on something they think they deserve a high score. The lessons Roosevelt learned from the work with undergraduates is that they think attending class everyday and doing their best will earn them a high grade in the class, but in reality it is more than that. I agree with Roosevelt’s view. In my opinion, I think getting a high grade such as an A in a class for attending everyday, doing the assignments on time, and doing your best is not earned. I think that it counts for the grade but there is more to getting a high grade. It is important to understand the topic and have knowledge about it to get the good grade because if you just try your best you will not get anywhere because the topic/ information was not understood. What will a high grade get you if you don’t understand the material. I think that a grade does not matter, what matters most is the knowledge and understanding of the material and applying it. When you are doing something at work the letter grade will not matter, it is the knowledge that will matter as it will be used to apply on the job everyday.
In the article, Minnick states that "property" is something owned by a person or a group and it shouldn't be owned by any other person. Minnick also uses examples showing that if a person steals one of your property such as a car or a phone, the owner would be very mad at the thief for stealing something that is not their's. Minnick links this example to school where many students take someone else's original idea's. Though I feel like there are millions of ideas all over the internet, we sometimes think of something and assume its our own idea, but it turns out that someone already have thought of it. I agree with Minnick that if we articulate an idea, then we have ownership of it. But I can also argue that sometimes when we think of an idea that we have never seen or heard of from other people we assume we are the first one to find that out, this does not result in stealing someone's idea it's just that it was done accidentally as sometime's we are uninformed about many things. I do believe that when we use someone else's ideas, it is important to give them credit. "Avoiding Plagiarism" Sharon WilliamsIn the article, Williams gives multiple advice to avoid plagiarism. Sharon Williams also states that when we do research, we often forget to cite and document the sources that we get our information from, which ends up being viewed as plagiarism. Williams also mentions paraphrasing information to avoid plagiarism. In the article, Williams provided examples on how to cite sources. This article reminds me of a time in high school where my teacher taught is ways to cite, paraphrase, and quote information that we take from other people. The article also reminds me of Purdue Owl where it guides us on how to cite a source. I found this article to be very informative in helping students avoid plagiarism.
In the text, Jones defines an educated person as a person who is always trying to progress and better themselves throughout. An educated person is also one who asks questions and look for understandings. I agree with Jones' opinion on what an educated person is because I believe that an educated person is someone who is always curious and has a never ending curiousness of things. An educated person is also a person who continues to expand their knowledge. Being educated has no limit because there are many new things to discover throughout our lifetime. Everyday there is always something new that is discovered. Being an educated person can make a difference in one's life as it can offer many advantages compared to a non-educated person. "Having a Degree and Being Educated" -Edmund D. Pellegrino, M.D.In the text, Pellegrino differentiates having a degree and being educated. Pellegrino states that having a degree today is "only a certificate of exposure, not a guarantee of infection." I agree with Pellegrino's statement about having a degree. Having a degree is just a certificate that shows a persons academic achievements, those getting a degree is important I believe that it doesn't really show how educated a person is. I believe that anyone can get a degree. A degree won't show a person's knowledge as it is just a paper. Being educated shows a person who knows what they are doing and is prepared to enter what the world has to offer. I believe that a degree is just for show and being educated is the knowledge a person has when entering the field they are specializing in. They are prepared and have the skills they learned. "The College Dropout Boom" -David LeonhardtIn the text, Leonhardt mentions that most of college dropouts come from the poor and working-class families as they choose to work and earn money instead of going to college and getting an education. Leonhardt also mentions that having a college education and a degree results in steady pay increases compared to those who don't. Though going to school can sometimes be tiring, in the end it'll pay off and give us a good future. In the text high school was mentioned. College is way different from high school and in my opinion there is no way of preparing high school students for college as people experience things differently. I believe that in today's world many high school students think about ways of getting money before they think about college. Though money is an essential need, a college education is much more important. I do believe that many college students need money for college but it is not a priority to drop out of college just to work and start making money. I think the best option would be to get a part-time job while in college to make some money on one's free time. Dropping out of college is a huge risk. "Job Search: Chance or Plan?" -Mark R. Ballard In the text, Ballard makes a strong point that "Making the transition from academics to the work world does not begin with writing a resume, buying a new suite, or getting that first job interview. It begins with thought, research, and goal setting." I think that this statement is very strong in making people realize reality. I believe that in order to be successful in life we have to think about what we want and set a goal on how to achieve it. From the title of the article change and plan are very different from each other and they both have different outcomes. Plan is the best option in my opinion because it shows what a person really wants and want to do/accomplish. When you plan something you are the person in charge but when you pick chance, you don't have the wheel to get you there, it is like a hit or miss. Taking chances does not give you validity and assurance compared to when it is planned it is set in stone. Planning gives the best outcome in the long-run.
In the text Halverson first starts off with the first 9 universities established and is still in existence. The American Universities were influenced by English Universities where they got the four college classes: freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior. In the text Halverson also mentions that colonial colleges had education programs which followed 3 characteristics; one being the programs were only intended for men, specifically men who aspired to the Christian ministry. The text also mentioned that the old practice required students to take the same courses, which later changed due to the broadening of curriculums. Women was later able to get higher education with the establishment of colleges for women. Some colleges began admitting men and women. One of the great "horizontal" growth in American higher education enabled existing curriculums to broaden, add new curriculums, establish new institutions, and the opportunity for higher education was made available to a larger mass of students. The Morrill Act allowed public education and President Lincoln gave grants to every state. German universities also influenced American higher education. Halverson introduced the three tasks of a modern university which is instruction, research, and public service. I found this article to be really interesting and informative in knowing the history of education and universities. It also made me realize how I am able to attend a university today and be able to take many classes. "Technology Skills: Wireless, Windowed, Webbed, and Wikied" -Constance StaleyIn the text, Staley states that information literacy and technology skills will play a large role in academic success in college. It is important to know how to use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Blackboard, etc. It is also important to know a little bit about technology when conducting research for a class. In college technology is used on a daily bases. Technology is used to turn in assignments, check grades, check announcements and emails from professors, sign up for classes, take quizzes, etc. Staley mentions that technology will help manage courses, interact with course content, classmates, and instructors, complete assignments, and increase learning. The internet has many advantages such as current, availability, scope, interactivity, and affordability. The internet also has risks such as inaccuracy, over dependence, and laziness. The internet can also be used dangerous ways such as having too much information on someone and other threatening information that can cause harm to other people. This article shows the importance of technology and the internet but there are also disadvantage to it. I agree with most of the information Constance Staley had in the article as it is very relatable to me. Constance Staley has many important information and details about technology.
In the text James talks about the 8 primary forms of intelligence that Howard Gardener discovered in the research they conducted. James also added one of her own form of intelligence in the list. The 8 primary forms of intelligence are verbal/linguistic intelligence, logical/mathematical intelligence, visual/spatial intelligence, body/kinesthetic intelligence, musical/rhythmic intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, and spiritual intelligence. Jennifer James added practical intelligence. Jennifer James also identified four "'styles"' that people use to process information. These four styles are analytical, conceptual, structural and social. James also mentioned system thinking in the article which talked about enabling us to see the bigger picture. From the 8 primary forms of intelligence, I believe that I learn visually and kinesthetically. When something is being taught I learn best when something is right in front of me such as a visual, text, or a presentation because when the professor is teaching by just talking; it doesn't register in my brain and when I'm taking notes I tend to forget what was said really easily. "How Do You Perceive & Process Information?" -Constance StaleyStaley starts off the article by talking about how everyone has a different style based on how they dress and comparing it to the style people learn. Staley defines learning style as "'your characteristic and preferred way of gathering, interpreting, organizing, and thinking about information."' Staley also mentions the sensory modalities in which we take in information. These sensory modalities are visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. Staley also introduced the VARK preferences, which is a test to help identify your learning modality. After taking the VARK test I scored with 15 in visual, 14 in read/write, 11 in kinesthetic, and 2 in aural. This shows that I prefer learning visually, read/write, and kinesthetic which is correct. My lowest is aural, which is true. "Active Learning" -James TwiningIn the article, James Twining talks about how studies done psychologists and others show that active learners are successful learners. According to their research students who underline key ideas and take notes remember what they learn more than those students who don't. Their research also shows that students who look for ways to improve their skills of study and further develop their skills are more likely to become successful learners. Twining states that knowing how to learn, how to use specific strategies, and make good study habits a routine improves the likelihood of success. Active learners plan, monitor, and evaluate what they are doing to accomplish a task. In this article James Twining further explains the importance of self-questioning, note-taking, questioning, summarizing, self-testing, and review and memory. I do agree with most of Twining's points in this article because I do believe that in order to become successful, it takes a lot of hard work and effort which is what he is stating in this article through learning.
"Rigor Redefined" -Tony Wagner & "The Difference Between High School and College" -Jack W. Meiland10/1/2017 An instance from high school where I learned a topic well was in my Sports Medicine class. The topic was learning how to wrap injuries such as a sprain or strain on the foot or hand and other parts of the body. I learned the different proper steps of wrapping and taping by listening my teacher explain every single step and while watching her do an example on one of the students’ foot or hand. It sticks out in my mind because it was one of the classes that I had fun in and it was an unforgettable experience. The class was also easy and it was hands on. The experience reflects on how I learn by being a visual learner and also an hands on learner where I get to do it myself. In “Rigor Redefined” by Tony Wagner, he talks about critical thinking and problem solving. To relate this topic to what I learned in class, it is important to know what to do when you are wrapping in the class and in exams. Being able to think and wrap in the proper steps is important to understanding what is being taught. Collaboration and leadership also relates to my topic because it is important to work as a team with your partner when wrapping their foot or hand so nothing bad can happen such as wrapping too tight and your partner does not say anything about it which can end up cutting the blood circulation. Adapatability is also useful because each week we obtain new partners, so it is important to be able to be flexible with your new partner and be comfortable in touching their feet and hands. Oral communication is also important in wrapping because your partner can give feedback on your wrapping skills, correct you if you are doing the wrong step, and tell you if you are wrapping too tight. In “The Difference Between High School and College” by Jack W. Meiland, he mentions that the method of study that is commonly used in high school is by memorization and formulas. When I think of how I had to remember how to properly wrap someones hand or feet for our finals or just during practice I had to memorize the steps to be able to wrap properly and correctly as a professional would. Meiland also mentions the difference on how college professors and high school teachers present. I believe there is a huge difference because in high school, teachers are able to help students more better because there are less compared to college where professors have to be seen during office hours.
The the text, Malcom talks about his experience in prison and how being in prison has helped and change him as a person. In prison he was able to read almost all day. Malcolm read so many books in prison that he described himself as a "walking encyclopedia". He also stated that he was able to gain more knowledge in prison than he would have if he attended college. I found it surprising that Malcolm was able to finish writing all the words in the dictionary and also was able to memorize and learn all the different words. Malcolm was also able to learn more about history through reading. He was able to learn more about himself and what African Americans went through back in the day that he had no idea about. After reading this you can tell that Malcolm went from knowing nothing to knowing almost everything.
In the text the authors questioned the importance of Universities and why billions is spent on building Universities. Later in the text Halverson and Carter further explains why Universities are built and why "academic freedom" is important. The two author's talk about how "academic freedom" can only exist when the two conditions are met, which they further describe and talk about in the text. They also talk about how academic freedom has enemies such as: fear, sheer laziness, and undue respect for tradition. I agree with what Halverson and Carter said about having academic freedom in the text. I also agree that we are given academic freedom for a reason. "Are We Going To Get Smarter?" -Roger C. SchankThe text talks about intelligence. Schank compares the intelligence of people 50 years ago to the next 50 years. He mentions that 50 years ago people were very intelligent, with the use of encyclopedias. With the innovations of technology people are getting to their sources faster and are also able to learn almost everywhere as long as they have their electronic devices with them. I believe that there are many new things being invented that can help better the future. Though technology can help us it can also be a problem if used the wrong way. I do believe that the knowledge of people is continuously growing. Technology is one of our most helpful resource in todays generation as we can get information very fast. As technology continues to be invented, knowledge and intelligence in the future can't be measured as it continues to grow rapidly.
In the text, the author tells us the story of how his father emerged himself to be white and influence his family to become racists when they came to the United States. The author shows us that his father chose to forget who he really is and leave his culture and ethnicity out of his life. It is shown in the reading that no matter how hard his father tried to be "American," it never worked because his facial features, personality, accent, etc. was still within him and he couldn't get rid of that. Later, the author was influenced by his father where he learned to become racist and be white, which he did successfully. I liked how in the end of the text the author tells us that he quickly realized that he was being someone who he's really not. He learned to accept who he really is and learn his culture and know more about himself through his mother. This text teaches us a lesson to appreciate who you are and where you came from, because in the end those are the things that can't be changed or taken away from a person. "How Does It Feel To Be A Problem?" -Moustafa BayoumiIn the text, Bayoumi talked about the outcome of the tragic event that happened in New York. She mentions that after that event, people in the Arab and Muslim communties were judged and mistakenly identified. In the text the author mentions that they are required to carry a special ID and undergo a more intensive security checks when boarding a plane. She shows that people in the Arab and Muslim communities are mistakenly blamed for certain things, just because of their looks. They were racially profiled and still up to this day. This text shows us a problem that was started by someone that has and still is affecting many innocent people. Racial profiling is still a problem today that people often don't realize.
In this article, Ronald Takaki gives examples of well-known people such as: Tiger Woods and Barack Obama showing the diversity in their culture and ethnicities. This article shows that the United States is very diverse. The United States is also influenced by many different cultures. In the article Ronald Takaki makes us believe that in the United States there is not ethnic group that is more superior than any other; he shows us that all ethnic groups are all equal. I liked the article in a way that Takaki had a message to the diversity of ethnic groups in the United States. I also found the beginning of the article very mesmerizing due to Takaki mentioning that the former president Bill Clinton reached out to Takaki of wanting him to help write a major speech. That is a very big deal because it is the president asking.
Identities:
Filipino(A)- I am privileged to be Filipino because I am proud of who I am and where I came from. Female(T)- I am often targeted because sometimes females are often seen weak and wouldn't be able to handle those of what males can do. Educated(A)- I am privileged to be educated and be able to attend a university because some people are disadvantaged to attend college or have an education. Middle Class(A)- I am privileged to be able to be provided the necessities in life. Catholic(A&T)- I feel like being catholic can be an advantage but also targeted as people have different opinions on one's religion 1. I am most aware of my ethnicity and gender because it is who I am everyday and what people also see on a daily basis. 2. The identity that I am most aware of that is targeted would be being a female because people usually don't see females as strong as males. 3. Sometimes I take being educated for granted because sometimes I feel like giving up in my studies but usually realize the hard work my parents did to give me a good education. 4. The identity that I am less aware of that is an advantage would be the different types of class. I usually don't care about the class of a person because I believe that everyone is all human and the same. 5. An identity that I would want to work on being aware of if my religion because I am not usually as religious as my parents and grandparents. I also would like to know more about my religion aside from the basic information that I already know. In the text McIntosh describes"white privilege" as an invisible package of unearned assets. This text is about McIntosh preparing a research for male privilege in the United States. McIntosh mentions in the text that racism is something that is taught; which puts people at a disadvantage especially those who have colored skin. In the text "white privilege" is seen as powerful and vivid through the idea of it being an invisible weightless knapsack. I really like how McIntosh further explained in her opinion of what is means to have "white privilege." I was able to see the underlying meaning and the beliefs of most whites of having their "white privilege" amongst the other people of color. "Explaining White Privilege To A Broke White Person" -Gina Crosley-CorcoranIn the article, the author shows that just because someone is white they have "white privilege." The author gives a more meaningful meaning of having privilege and shows how there are many different privileges aside from white privilege. The author shows that the privileges that people have are things we are all born into and these types of privileges are the ones that can impact people in a good or bad way. The author teaches us that "Recognizing privilege simply means being aware that some people have to work much harder just to experience the things you take for granted (if they ever can experience them at all)." I like this part from the article because we don't really understand what people go through unless you are in their shoes. This line in the article makes us realize that we have to be grateful for what we have as others may be struggling and working hard to get the things we have and take for granted.
This text is about how many different cultures and races compare themselves to Whites. In this text it shows that Whites are viewed as more superior than most of the other races such as: African Americans, Hispanics/Latino's, and Asian Americans. These races try to fit in and do their best to try to be white by changing the way they look, their culture, beliefs, etc. Later in the text it is brought up that being African American, Hispanic/Latino, or Asian American is equally the same as being White. Derald and David shows that other races other than white should not be ashamed of who they are and accept what they are because no one is superior than any other. I really liked this text because it shows that Whites are not as superior as people think they are and that other races should learn and be proud of who they are. "Are There Class Cultures?" -Betsy Leondar-WrightIn the text different class cultures are compared and contrasted. Low income class, working class, middle class, and owning class was differentiated and compared by what they do and the stereotypes people from other classes view them as. In the text Wright talks about how there are many different stereotypes about the four different classes. There are some bad stereotypes and good stereotypes, but in the text it is explained that most stereotypes are not true and far different. Wright also talks about the different expectations of the different classes and how people feel about them. It is mentioned in the text that some of the classes are being brought down due to their status. I like how this text showed the differences of the different class cultures in a more precise explanation. I also liked how Wright embedded the different things each class culture can do and is good at and combined all of them in the end to make them whole and equal.
In the text Weeber starts of with asking multiple questions with repetition of "What could I know of." Weeber compares the pain that colored people felt to being disabled. She compares how racism is similar to being disabled due to the similarity of the pain both parts encounter. Weeber mentions how people view her because of her disability and the pain she feels. Weebly also talks about her journey of being disabled since she was a baby up until her adulthood. I really like this text because it gave me a different view of how people with disabilities feel. It also gave a a feel of their struggles and pain with their disability. "Growing Up With Two Moms" -Megan McGuireThe text is about learning to accept people. In the text McGuire talked about her journey on accepting having two moms and also the idea of having different genders. She also included her journey of living with two moms and dealing with the situation in public, at home, and at school. She also included her understanding having different genders in her childhood. I really like how McGuire made her story in a timeline format as it really told her story. I also gained more knowledge of the different hardships people face in life and also finding out who true friends and supportive people are in these types of situations.
In the reading Atwell mentions the importance of the need of higher education. He also discusses that though a high education is important; the importance of knowing values and citizenship. Atwell also includes that "students have an impact far beyond the boundaries of the campus," which I believe is true. Students have more to them than they show or do when they are in school. Students have a far more capability than what is expected of them. I agree with Atwell's statement about having knowledge of values and having citizenship because it is essential to everyday life. "What Does Society Need From Higher Education?" -David R. PierceThis piece of text talks about how higher education is necessary in different aspects of life. Having a high education allows people to thrive. Pierce talks about how having a high education is good for businesses, workers, the government, and its' citizens. Higher education allows us to be more diverse, solve problems, be more alert in different situations, be more prepared for/in life, and also to be flexible in whatever that can be thrown in one's direction. In my opinion I agree with Pierce's ideas. I believe that having a high education allows people to do and overcome so many situations. I also believe that having a high education is what is needed in this modern world where everything is evolving at a very fast pace.
